Over the next three days, ‘SHED’ is putting up its first design and culture festival called ‘Out of the Shed’, which to an extent, can also be called the city’s first such exhibition. In a holistic sense, the festival is a culmination and collaboration of art workshops, musical performances, design talks, exhibition of various life style products designed at SHED, movie screenings, games, and much more.

“SHED is a space where you do things, and this exhibition is the coming together of all of the things that we have been working on since quite some time. There’s the exhibition of products designed by me on  which Yogi, Jaydeep, Siddharth and Aditi have also worked on, in more than one ways.

We went around the state and shot music videos for Yogi and Swati’s ‘The Tapi Project’, who will also be doing a pre album launch gig at the exhibition.
So it’s a lot of small things coming together, giving the festival its form. The idea of SHED is very democratic.” said Priyanka Shah, who’s all set to launch her lifestyle products at the exhibition.

SHED was co founded by the cousins, Siddhant Shah and Priyanka Shah, sometime last year.

The following is a brief introduction to the pieces pieces that make up the festival.

1- ‘PRIY’

movie IMG_5251

In the ancient language of Sanskrit, Priy means ‘beloved.’ Priy exists to create products that create delight in the everyday lives of people.

Priy is a lifestyle product brand, that designs playfully premium products like furniture, games, tops, and more. Incubated at SHED, it is a brand headed by designer Priyanka Shah, who believes in the honesty of pure materials, and the value design gives to them.

Every piece at Priy is crafted with care, by hand and machine. The materials are locally sourced, and provide livelihood to the industries of India.
2- The Tapi Project

The Tapi Project is Yogi, and people he worked with during different phases of his musical explorations, all coming together forming one homogeneous act.

music

Back in the day, Nihit and Yogi were part of a classic rock band ‘Tantra’, which in his words, ‘never saw the light of the day.’ Nihit’s takes care of the electronic side of things for The Tapi Project. He is also the sound engineer on the project.

Swati and Yogi met at a competition amongst bands from the city, held at SVNIT. Yogi was judging the competition and Swati was the lead vocalist of the band that had won it. Swati is The Tapi Project’s voice.

Anand Mani Joseph and Yogi used to play together at Odyssey.  They have worked together on the band’s maiden album ‘No Hay Banda’, which was released in 2013. Anand plays guitars and keyboards for the project. [Unfortunately, he wouldn’t be able to be a part of this gig.]

3- Lineage
Made in India proudly by artisans and craftsmen who still hold within themselves the responsibility of carrying forward their lineage. They are the carriers of a legacy consisting of methods and means developed after generations of trial and error and have by now mastered their handicraft.

Lineage’s aim is to support this dialogue and in fact, take part in it. We strive to gather from age old wisdom and look for ways to reinvent ourselves through it. The three day festival and exhibition will also feature the launch of fashion products, designed under the umbrella of Lineage by Mrs Nika Shah.

Launched in 2014, Ritu Jains Paperdom is a paperlicious journey, all about creating a wide as well as eco-friendly line of handmade paper products. The idea behind Paperdom, and all of the workshops being conducted under its umbrella is to bring back those elements and moments that thrive on touch and feel; the joy of creating something, out of simple things.

This series of workshops are for anyone and everyone! If you want to get closer to reliving your childhood and going back to those SUPW classes, this is where you dig you hands into and get them all dirty.

If you want to register for the workshops, here you go: http://goo.gl/forms/fDqETmbR1r

6- Movie Screenings

Let us all settle down with some munchies, shall we?

movie

On Friday night, i.e 30th October, Persepolis shall be screened.Inspired by the graphic novel which goes by the same name, the movie runs in three different languages and follows the life of a girl growing up against the backdrop of the Iranian revolution.

On Sunday night, i.e 1st November, its going to be Wes Anderson’s The Darjeeling Unlimited.
Simple scripts, well crafted, articulated and executed frames, scenes and shots, and the ability of saying things in the simplest of the ways, Wes Anderson is one of the very important film makers of our generation.
The Darjeeling Limited in about three emotionally distant brothers, travelling together on a train in India.
The movies are on the house.

What makes the deal sweeter? It’s an Open to the Sky screening.
SO basically we are going to screen them under the moon and the stars.

7- The Organic Supper
No festival in Surat shall ever be complete if it doesn’t have anything related to food. Now SHED has decided to take care of that department, with its own twist and flavor.
This food experiment, 100% organic, aims at creating a fusion of the Gujarati and Continental cuisine, which shall be delicious, mouthwatering, and shall do things to your heart and soul.

The Venue

For all the ones who had attended the ‘Alchemix’ concert, it’s the same place.
For the ones who do not know- Samaysaar, opposite Empire Regency, Near Nandini 3, VIP Road, Vesu, Surat, is technically the address.
To make things simpler, if you are heading straight on VIP road towards the highway, take the first left after that weird looking electric pole which has been put up,[and God himself only knows why] right in the middle of the road.

“We have tried to shift towards the ‘analog’, things that one can touch and feel. Also, the entire approach is very organic, which is also visible in the way that we are sculpting the exhibition space.
In simple words, it is an attempt towards creating a better kind of lifestyle, more of going towards and back to the roots, over and above everything else” says Yogi, who can be described as a very important cog in the wheel.

Remember, Oct30-Nov1, three days of a lot of it packed together. If nothing, come drop by, spend some time at the exhibition, chill, perhaps read a book at out garden library, have a good time, and leave. Our doors are forever open.
