Kahani, Kalam aur Kitab- Surat Kahani Fest 2015: Our city’s first and very own Literature Festival.

BLOG

‘Surat mein Lakshmi bahut hai, par sarasvati bilkul nahi’, is a common perception a lot of people have about Surat. The city has always been an ever thriving hub for commerce and trade, but as far as culture and literature goes, it hasn’t not exactly had a lot happening.
Well, now at least one thing is going to change. This November, our city is all set to host its first ever literature festival.

The evolution of mankind is interminably interwoven with the art of storytelling. It has had the power to evoke the strongest of emotions within us and history has remembered more story tellers than it has conquerors and kings. Storytelling is built into the fabric of our lives, from the fairy tales and folktales of childhood to the nostalgic reminiscences of our grandparents and also by DRAMA and FILMS.

‘Surat Kahani Fest’ is being spearheaded by DPS Tapi and DPS Surat, together. On 28th and 29th November, a number of artists from all across the country are going to come to our city, putting together a show comprising of workshops, plays, mono acts etc.
Works of eminent literary legends like Rabindranath Tagore, Ismat Chugtai, Amrita Pritam, Munshi Premchand, Sarat Chandra and many other artists are to be featured and recreated in different ways at the festival.

“Since quite some time, a lot of people have been making strong attempts to get literature scene in the city going. Surat Kahani Fest is a lot of such small attempts coming together in one solid form. Since this is the first year, we have tried to keep things simple. S0 we picked ‘Kahani’ as the theme, because everyone loves stories. Also, to create a more personal atmosphere, most of our participating artisans have been associated with our city in a way or the other. This festival is all about going back to our roots.” Said G. R. Sivakumar, education consultant for DPS Tapi and Surat.

Here’s a brief introduction about few important activities at Surat Kahani Fest.
Apart from the below mentioned workshops, there’s lot more happening at the festival.

Also, along with all of it, Surat Kahani Fest is also running a story telling competition so as to boost and thereby bring across the works of people of our very own city which are yet to be given wings to.
Spread across two groups, the competition gives the winners a chance to show case their work during the festival.

The aim of Surat Kahani Fest is for literature loves to come together at one point, share their ideas, enjoy the festival and go back home with an elated state of mind.
Let’s all of us come together, and make this beginning a new, strong one.
Come one, come all. Doors open on Nov 28th, 9 am.
