The world is teetering on the edge of a precipice. With global warming, climate change, pollution ravaging the world, the only thing that can save the planet is collective individual efforts. The youth of today tend to have a cavalier attitude when it comes to the environment, because their education lacks the knowledge they require to understand the gravity of the situation. Gajera Global School saw this pattern in India’s youth, and decided to do something about it. They launched a school-wide Green Education programme to teach their students about the environment, instill environmental ethics, and make them realise that their everyday actions can make a difference.

About Green Education
Green Education is a holistic programme which gives the students opportunities for rich, hands-on, real world, and authentic learning outside of the traditional curriculum. It allows students to explore environmental issues, engage in problem solving, and take action to improve the environment.
Students learn about everything from seed and plant identification, organic farming, water conservation, preparing compost, indoor plants, green transport, and so much more. They realise first hand how relevant all this knowledge is to their everyday lives as individuals who live on planet Earth. They study about global issues such as climate change, water conservation, soil pollution, and learn about how much this planet is affected by the actions of humans.
Gajera Global School has a revolutionary seed-to-table concept, in which the produce that the students have grown, is used in the school kitchens to make their food. The students learn everything about the processes, theories, and the actual practise of what and how a plant grows from the seed to what we see on the table. The students’ hard work is incorporated, and it directly engages the students, encouraging them to eat healthier, and it is a supremely eco-friendly concept. Not only is the produce healthy, it is also grown by the students themselves, with the help of the compost the students made, without the use of any fertilizers or pesticides whatsoever.
A Transformation in Students
This programme requires students to directly engage with their surroundings, growing plants, making compost, etc. causing them to form a connection with the environment. They develop a keen awareness and sensitivity to the environment, as well as environmental challenges and changes. The students display an attitude of concern for the environment and motivation to improve or maintain environmental quality.
As a direct result of the Green Education programme, the students have been instilled with the skills required to identify and help resolve environmental challenges. They are questioning, investigating, forming hypotheses, interpreting data, analyzing, developing conclusions, and solving problems. They are determined to do their part for our planet.
