What is the best way to kick back and relax?”A cup of coffee and a book in an outdoor setting sounds just right.”,says Dishant Jariwala.
It is true that passion can drive you to what may seem unobtainable. Many have achieved unsurmountable heights and were driven solely by passion. Such individuals set examples for us and one such person that adds to the list is Dishant Jariwala. The owner, curator and founder of The Haus, Surat.
An amateur in the food industry and a devoted lover of desserts, Dishant welcomed patrons to The Haus on 24 June this year. A chemical engineer from Germany, Dishant has had great love for food from his college days. He deftly observes, “People in Surat have a sweet tooth but they have fewer places to explore different kind of desserts. I wanted to open a place that felt like home for them and gave them an experience of comfort . A place that could compete with the level of cafes present in metropolitan cities as well”.

Haus is German for house as explained by Dishant. A place where you can relax, read a book in silence, have a refreshing coffee, play a game, have conversations, make connections and have fun in general. Haus wishes to give you this kind of experience infused with some luxury. Mr.Jariwala’s work is truly commendable because he put this place together in a matter of just one and a half month. Who could say after looking at this cocoon? He says “It was all very spontaneous. The location, the menu and everything else.”
We discovered that most of the recipes on the menu are his own creations .He is a big Masterchef fan and keeps on researching and experimenting on food. All the recipes have his professional touch and that is what makes them unique – including the names of each of the dish on the menu.
When asked what his day to day responsibilities are, he says “I’m all over the place. I fit in different roles”. Someday he leads the kitchen, someday he is on the floor managing the place, and he has also gone out to get the raw materials and has also washed the dishes. He mentions that he spends 12-13 hours every day at the cafe . In the initial stage he used to arrive at 7 in the morning and leave at 1 in the night. A tough industry to survive in, we must admit Dishant seems to be doing it effortlessly. He emphasizes,” If you treat it as a business then it won’t work out. Treat it as your passion and satisfy your customers. If you get too money-minded then you will go down the train”.

He explains that at the end of the day even if one customer says that he has never eaten anything like that offered by Haus in Surat ,it brings up his spirit. Compliments keep him going. People in Surat want new experiences everyday and Haus is ready for the challenge. The menu is revamping and additions like pastas, salads and smoothies and around 8 more desserts are being added. Nevertheless,Haus offers the best and the most unparalleled sandwiches in town. They make their own bread every day. They offer 6 different types of bread and hardly store anything. Any leftovers are given to the underprivileged. Cheers to that!! The Haus is also expanding itself and introducing a gaming zone unlike any other in India. We suggest you keep the nerd in you all geared.
A big shout out to Dishant for his powerful vision and for raising the bar for Surat. His search for turning his love into passion and passion into reality is an example for us.
